Exploring the Energy-Latency Trade-off of Broadcasts in IEEE 802.11 Power Save Networks

چکیده
Efficient information dissemination is essential for the operation of sensor networks. However, one of the challenges to efficient information dissemination arises from only a random subset of nodes being active in any given time. This is mainly due to sensor networks employing power-saving techniques to compensate the energy constraints of sensor nodes. Specifically, significant delay is incurred from any packet transmission attempt in a power-saving network that allow nodes periodically switch to sleep modes to conserve energy. In this paper, we propose a Probability-Based Broadcast Protocol (PBBF) that aims to provide fast broadcast propagation in the case of such networks. Simulation studies show that PBBF efficient and effective information dissemination with low latency while still maintaining high delivery ratios.

Modified Power save Model for Better Energy Efficiency and Reduced Packet Latency
Devices constituting wireless ad-hoc networks generally operate in battery power, energy efficiency is a critical research issue. IEEE 802.11 Power Save Mode is a standard recommended for energy efficient operation of wireless ad-hoc networks. When there is no data to transfer, energy is still utilized by IEEE 802.11 PSM during the ATIM window. With this work, an attempt is made to address this...
متن کاملA link-indexed statistical traffic prediction approach to improving IEEE 802.11 PSM
IEEE 802.11 power save mode (PSM) is a representative of energy-saving protocols which put wireless network interfaces into sleep during idleness. To save energy, part of the performance of IEEE 802.11 is sacrificed attributed to the wake-up latency thus introduced. This paper proposes a complementary mechanism, called link-indexed statistical traffic predictor (LISP) to improve IEEE 802.11 PSM...
متن کاملImproving Power Save Protocols Using Carrier Sensing and Busy-Tones for Dynamic Advertisement Windows
Energy efficient protocols are important in ad hoc networks since battery life for wireless devices is limited. The IEEE 802.11 protocol specifies a simple power save mechanism (PSM) to conserve energy. However, the protocol needlessly wastes energy when traffic is light in a network, and significantly increases packet latency. In this paper, we consider three techniques to improve the 802.11 P...

The paper investigates the feasibility of using IEEE 802.11 in energy harvesting low-power sensing applications. The investigation is based on a prototype carbon dioxide sensor node that is powered by artificial indoors light. The wireless communication module of the sensor node is based on the RTX4100 module. RTX4100 incorporates a wireless protocol that duty-cycles the radio while being compa...
متن کاملEnhanced power saving mode for low-latency communication in multi-hop 802.11 networks
The Future Internet of Things (IoT) will connect billions of battery-powered radio-enabled devices. Some of them may need to communicate with each other and with Internet gateways (border routers) over multi-hop links. While most IoT scenarios assume that for this purpose devices use energy-efficient IEEE 802.15.4 radios, there are use cases where IEEE 802.11 is preferred despite its potentiall...
